The Logic of Pro-Life

After I complete the current tasks on my writer's desk, I am going to write an article on the logic of the pro-life position. I just have to. The illogic of abortion just never goes away.

Sheila Liaugminas covered a story today on her InForum blog about a renewed attempt to expand embryonic stem cell research in Michigan. The last line in her post is a kicker, but it sadly shows how little people think about the life issues. One would assume that such important issues as the impact of science on human life and dignity would merit deep, careful thought. Yet, it seems that neither side of the abortion issue has done so. Gregory Koukl of Stand to Reason laments that even pro-life political candidates cannot articulate why they are pro-life.

It is enough for Catholics and other Christians to say, "God hates abortion." As believers, we want to be obedient to our Lord and Creator. However, we cannot use these arguments ("The Bible says so," "The Church says so," etc.) in the secular world. God is the Author of Reason, so whatever He commands has reason behind it. Sometimes we don't need to know those reasons, but they are there nonetheless. In the case of abortion and other moral issues the reasons are readily available to the human intellect. We need to know those reasons and be able to articulate them.
